However, this week Torrevieja's Mayor, Pedro Hernandez Mateo confirmed that the Department of Infrastructure and Transport of the Valencia Regional Government, has finally approved an idea for a new regular public transport route between Torrevieja and the airport at Alicante.
Hernandez Mateo explained that such a service would provide greater potential for Torrevieja's tourist industry.
The popular holiday and residential resort of Torrevieja has a population of over 100,000 people of which over half are not Spanish. Sixty per cent are citizens of the EU however, many of whom moved to Torrevieja for the fantastic holiday weather, as have many Spanish citizens also. The proposed passenger service between Torrevieja and Alicante airport will provide a high quality service in relation to standards of comfort, safety and accessibility.
The proposal is to look at the different transport options, between bus, coach and other ideas.
The new service is expected to provide hopefully 12 round trips each day, 365 days a year. Hernandez Mateo also indicated that at least part of the route is expected to use the A-7 motorway as this will offer the best travel times especially in Summer because of heavy traffic and lower speeds found on the busier coastal N-332 route.
